2 by 2 is a brand new self-published student run magazine at the National Institute of Design. It is a biannual publication that provides a fresh outlook on student initiatives, campus culture and design scenarios through inquiry and discourse.
Started out as project to revive the student magazine culture at NID, 2 by 2 evolved become the campus’ raw stream of consciousness. Unfiltered and unbiased, it presents itself as a work in progress rather than a polished statement.
Over the span of 6 months, give or take, we established the magazine, curated content, hosted events, designed spreads, oversaw the print production and created a marketing and distribution strategy of 2 by 2’s very first issue.
Issue 1 Theme: What Do We Talk About?
As a magazine for the students, by the student we wanted to ask the community what are the things they’d like to talk about. There are certain undercurrents to the conversations that take place on campus, and we envision the magazine to become a platform to host them freely.
The entries would fall under the sub-themes of:
🎓 Pedagogy
🫧 Bursting the Bubble
🎪 My Circus, My Monkeys
︎ Curating submissions
︎ Flat-planning
From post-it sized thumbnails of article headlines to test-prints of the designed spreads, we created physical flatplans at each stage of the magazine to simulate the reading experience and maintain continuity.
︎ Visual language
We are indebted to,
Purandar Dutta for his vision of bringing NID magazine back, Tanishka Kachru and Praveen Nahar for their unending support, Bonita Vaz-Shimray for guiding Riya and I in the first draft of the magazine, Sharan Adka for his views, Ranjan De and Mandakini Menon for showing us the history of NID editorials, Tarun Deep Girdher and Yogesh Patil for print guidance and most importantly, Rajesh Dahiya who said, “Don’t be design nuns.”
Finally, thanks to the NID community for their voices, enthusiasm and discourse.
