Suman is reverse stress, high contrast Kannada display typeface that was designed taking inspiration from an existing handpainted Gujarati signboard.
Letterform features from the refernce specimen were incorporated while transliterating between scripts. Currently the typeface designed features only 20 of the character glyphs.
Type walk ︎
To sensitize ourselves with the Indian legacy of hand painted typography signages, we went on a type walk guided by Tarun Deep Girdher. Type walks are a fun way to re-look at our cities through a typographic lens, and learn about the multi-lingual scripts in public spaces.

Reference type specimen ︎
The signage we chose to work with was a reverse contrast Gujarati script with a combination of narrow and large counters and ink spliffs at the endings.

Analysis ︎
After analysing the characteristics of the reference specimen, we studied the Kannada script.
We sketched out the root letterforms which would serve as a base to designing the rest of the letterforms.
