In today’s digital age, India has witnessed an alarming rise in cyber-crime incidents ranging from online fraud to data breaches and ransomware. In 2021 alone, over 50,000 individuals not only lost their hard-earned money but also their dignity to these crimes.
Cyber-crimes, involving computers or networks, threaten the security and privacy of individuals and organizations. Women and children are among the most targeted, facing various forms of cyber harassment, cyberbullying, and online stalking.
How can we empower individuals to safeguard their digital identities in the face of rising cyber threats and crimes?
︎ Data collection
Collecting datasets on the policed recorded Cyber Crime in India State/UT wise in the year of 2021 from the Crime In India report published by National Crime Records Bureau ncrb.gov.in
The NCRB report published serves as a reference for the stakeholders for planning policies and creating deterrence for future occurrence of crime in the society.

The data sets were broadly classified and organised as:
1. Cyber crimes statewise
2. Cyber Crimes - IT Act Cases

Crime is a highly complex phenomenon that changes across cultures and across time. Increased population, technological advancements and heightened competition for economic resources has brought a change in crime patterns.
To create a compelling data driven narrative, the number of reported cyber crimes along with the motives behind it were collected and organised. A tree-map has been created to visualize the proportion of the types of crimes that one may fall prey to. However, this visualisation only scratches the surface, as a large number of cases remain unreported due to societal and familial pressures.

︎ Design iterations
After narrowing down on a target audience, the data was visualised in the form of a tree-map, a method for displaying hierarchical data using nested figures.
To make sense of this mapping and bring out other insights, a layer of visual metaphor was added. Each unit of the map comprises of an electronic screen with illustrations of the rising threats that one may fall victim to.
